Green Shanny Day was developed in 2008 to honor the legacy of environmentalist Shannon Harps, who spent several years in Columbus, Ohio as a Sierra Club activist before moving to Seattle, Washington to continue her crusade to save our world. While working in Columbus, Ohio, Shannon organized a “Walk-to-work” day to encourage her fellow Ohioans to minimize their carbon footprint by walking, hiking, biking, riding the bus, and/or carpooling, even if only for a day, to positively impact our world.

Originally, Green Shanny Day honored this “Walk-to-work” activity by trying to do the same thing. Over the years, Green Shanny Day has expanded beyond it’s original purpose to not only encourage people to reduce their carbon footprint, but to participate in a wide variety of environmental activities. Participants have also worked on community gardens; planted trees in their communities; increased their environmental awareness through classes; and worked on environmental projects at local schools to name a few.

Register below then walk, car pool, skateboard or take the bus to work. Visit a park. Plant a tree. Recycle those obsolete electronics.
